Bramblestar's Nine Lives
Moonlight shone off the treetops, turning the forest silver. Crickets chirped from atop the branches as a soft greenleaf breeze whispered through the forest, carrying the tantalizing scent of fresh-kill hiding in their burrows across the long grass. The moon was nothing more than the thinnest of clawscratches, but the stars shone clear and white on the lake below.
A twig snapped in the undergrowth. Brambleclaw slowly lifted his paw, and glanced at the ground below him. Under the hazel thicket he was standing in was a pile of leaves from last leaf-fall, crumpled and dead. More twigs spread across the forest floor as well. Carefully, Brambleclaw stepped around the twigs, emerging into a small clearing.
"You don't have to be so careful, you know," came Leafpool's voice from behind him. "There's no one out here but us."
"I know, but I still don't know whether Starclan will accept me! I am Tigerstar's son, after all."

The voice filled his ears; taunting, teasing…the most poisonous thing in the world. It rang like chimes, sounding hollow and far away. The beautiful voice echoed in his ears, confusing him as to where it was. It sounded again, and he stumbled mindlessly toward it.
The gray-flecked tom found himself trudging through a field in greenleaf, the grass long and stiff. It blocked his view as he tried to locate the cat who was speaking. The faster he ran, the more it slapped his face and barred his way. Dark gray clouds were gathering in the sky, warning of an approaching storm. A cold wind, studded with tiny raindrops, washed through his pelt.
Where are you?
The voice faded away as he tried desperately to find it. Soon, it was gone, leaving him standing alone in the empty field.
“Why?” he snarled, baring his teeth. “I almost had you, only to let you get away again!”
